Improving the communication skills of graduates in a foreign language in preparation for the state maturity exam in a foreign language

The Lithuanian Association of Language Teachers (LALT) has prepared a project aimed at helping Lithuanian school students to prepare for the State examination in a foreign language (English, German and French). The project was implemented by active members of LALT – teachers’ experts with extensive experience in state school exams. The initiator and coordinator of the project is Audronė Auškelienė, the head of the Public Service Language Center. In this project, we aimed to help high school students who were unable to properly prepare for the foreign language state maturity exam due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with a special focus on speaking skills.
Free online consultations for school students.
From May to December, LALT experts offered free online consultations to school students from all over the country on the Zoom platform. During these online consultations, students’ communication skills were developed: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The counseling helped the school students to better prepare for the State examination in a foreign language, to learn to better apply communicative speaking strategies: to plan, create and present oral presentations in the form of both monologue and dialogue.

Teacher training seminars
Another activity of the project was practical training for language teachers “Development and Assessment of Speaking Skills in Preparation for the State Examination of a Foreign Language”. In December 2021, online virtual training was held and offered to LALT members, foreign language teachers and later uploaded to the YouTube channel and submitted for review by other teachers in the country. In addition, a set of guidelines and advice for teachers as an online resource based on expert material and recommendations was developed.
