Digital literacy teacher training programs

The Public Service Language Centre and the British Council, under the co-funded project People2People, have implemented two online teacher training programs: “Student-centred Learning in the Digital Classroom 2021” (17 November 2021–2 February 2022, 50 ac. hrs.). and “Technology and the Classroom 2021” (23 February 2022–4 April 4 2022, 50 ac. hrs).

Foreign language teachers in primary, progymnasium, basic schools, gymnasiums, secondary and vocational schools, colleges and national minority schools from all over Lithuania developed digital literacy skills in collaboration with Joe Dale, an independent languages consultant from the UK who works with a range of organisations such as Network for Languages, ALL, The British Council, the BBC, Skype, Microsoft and The Guardian. He was the host of the TES MFL forum for six years, former SSAT Languages Leading Practitioner, a regular conference speaker and a recognized expert on technology and language learning. He has spoken at conferences and run training courses in Europe, North America, South America, the Middle East, the Far East and Australasia. He was a member of the Ministerial Steering Group on languages for the UK coalition government and advised on the Linguanet Worldwide project for The Language Company. He created ICT activities for the new Institut Français, ALL and Network for Languages Primary French Project Niveau Bleu, Blanc and Rouge courses and was short-listed for a NAACE Impact Award in 2013 too. Joe is currently supporting the Erasmus Plus project Conflict to Cooperation with 5 European countries.

During the training, participants learned to use innovative technological tools that improve lesson management, organization, assessment of student learning outcomes, feedback, teacher-parent communication, and collaboration to improve student learning outcomes. Participants also deepened their practical technological skills by improving students’ language activities, teaching vocabulary, grammar, project work, and learning about mobile learning opportunities and how to develop multimodal content.

Practical training-lectures took place on the Zoom platform. Participants developed lesson plans, electronic  books using tools learned during the sessions.

At the end of the training, the participants of the seminars received recording of all lectures and certificates of professional development. The implementation of these programs is a significant help for a teacher who is able to put into practice the skills and attitudes in various areas of digital literacy competence.
